Meet the parents

Meet the Dachshund parent dogs

Parent information can help families understand a puppy’s background, but it cannot guarantee an individual puppy’s adult size, temperament or health. Request the names, current photographs and available records for the puppy’s dam and sire.

Questions about each parent

  • What are the parent’s age, size category and coat variety?
  • What is the parent like in everyday situations?
  • Which health tests or veterinary evaluations were completed?
  • Can dated records be reviewed, and who issued them?
  • Can the family meet the dam, or see recent photographs?

Understand what a record shows

Ask which statements are personal observations and which are supported by documents. If the sire belongs to another breeder, ask who holds the records and how they can be verified. Review any veterinary or health information with your veterinarian.

Specific parent names, test results and photographs should be added only after the breeder verifies them.

Questions about Dachshund parents

Answers specific to this page.

What should I ask about the parents?

Ask about temperament, veterinary history and any breed-recommended health testing. Request the names of tests and review dated results rather than relying on a general claim.

Can I meet the parent dogs?

Ask the breeder whether a visit or meeting is possible and what arrangements can be made. Do not assume both parents live on site.
