Dachshund care guide for U.S. homes

Dachshunds are lively, low-to-the-ground hounds with a long body and short legs. The American Kennel Club distinguishes six varieties by size (standard or miniature) and coat (smooth, long-haired or wire-haired). Individual needs still vary.

Grooming by coat variety

Smooth coats need routine brushing and general skin and nail care. Long-haired coats need regular brushing and attention to feathering around the ears, legs and tail. Wire-haired coats have a different texture and may need grooming guidance from a professional familiar with the coat. Ask the breeder or groomer to demonstrate a routine for the puppy you choose.

Activity, body condition and back care

Dachshunds are curious and active, but their body shape calls for thoughtful handling. Keep play age-appropriate, support the puppy securely when lifting and ask your veterinarian about suitable exercise and healthy body condition. Ask a veterinary professional about signs of back pain or weakness and what to do if they appear; this page cannot diagnose or prevent a medical condition.

Seasonal weather

Plan walks around local weather. Dry your dog after wet or snowy outings and provide a comfortable indoor resting place. Never leave a dog unattended in a parked vehicle in unsafe temperatures.

Veterinary and preventive care

Choose a veterinarian and discuss examinations, vaccination timing, parasite prevention, dental care, nutrition and growth. Bring the puppy’s records and have your veterinarian set a schedule for that individual dog.
