New Dachshund puppy checklist

Preparing before pickup can make the first days with a Dachshund puppy calmer. Ask the breeder what the puppy currently eats, how they sleep and toilet, and which records will come home with you.

Arrange care before pickup

  • Choose a veterinary clinic and book an initial appointment.
  • Ask what vaccination and parasite-treatment records will be provided.
  • Find a groomer familiar with the puppy’s smooth, long-haired or wire-haired coat.
  • Plan who will supervise the puppy during work, school and errands.

Prepare your home

  • Set up a quiet, comfortable resting area and a safe indoor play space.
  • Gather bowls, the current food, age-appropriate toys and cleaning supplies.
  • Use a secure carrier or vehicle restraint for the trip home.
  • Put medicines, toxic foods, cords and small objects out of reach.
  • Plan safe access around furniture and stairs; ask your veterinarian what is appropriate for your puppy.

Plan the first week

Introduce children and other pets gradually with adult supervision. Keep early days predictable, allow plenty of rest and use positive reinforcement for new routines. Store veterinary records, identification information and the signed agreement together.

Adapt the checklist to your home and follow your veterinarian’s advice.
